OPML import & export

OPML is the standard file podcast apps use to move a subscription list around. Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, AntennaPod, Podcast Addict and most others can export and import it.

Web: on the Library page, under Add podcast, choose your OPML file and press Import.

CLI:

Terminal window
podvault opml-import subscriptions.opml

In Docker, put the file in your data folder and run:

Terminal window
docker exec podvault podvault opml-import /app/data/subscriptions.opml

How the import behaves:

  • Idempotent. Only feeds that aren’t already in your feed list are added and synced, so importing the same file twice is harmless.
  • Folders are flattened. Feeds inside folders in the OPML are all imported.
  • Invalid URLs are skipped and reported.
  • Nothing is downloaded automatically. Download episodes as usual, or turn on auto-download in each podcast’s schedule.
  • Files over 5 MB, or that contain a DOCTYPE or entity declarations, are rejected before parsing. Real OPML files never need them.

Web: Export subscriptions (OPML) on the Library page.

CLI:

Terminal window
podvault opml-export -o podvault_subscriptions.opml # to a file
podvault opml-export # print it

This exports the original feed URLs of your podcasts, to import into another app.

Archive feeds (OPML) on the Library page (/feeds.opml) is a different file: it lists PodVault’s own feed for every podcast, so a podcast app can subscribe to your archive in one import. See Podcast app feeds.
